I get angry at ads for telling me what to do šŸ˜…

Back when I was a kid, I'd leave the room when commercials came on. I still do everything I can to avoid ads, because the feeling of being manipulated is gross.

Also, we don't buy things because they're popular or will impress other people. We buy things because we like them or find a practical use for them. Therefore, very few of us will fight someone over a stupid tumbler because it becomes high in demand.

So true! Iā€™m 62 and newly diagnosed on the spectrum. What an AHA moment! My ex husband and I bought a car. I researched literally everything about different manufacturers, what years were better (buying used), etc. He was NOT happy with the outcome but it needed up being the best choice!! That car lasted FOREVER!

I remember seeing comparative ads (think ads showing their paper towelā€™s absorbency as compared to ā€œthe other leading brandā€) as a little kid and getting so angry because I understood that as a viewer I had no way to be sure that the products shown in the video were actually what they said they were. Because of this, I felt like they were trying to trick me and I would get so upset over products that I, as an elementary school student, didnā€™t even buy!

Strong agree. I don't understand how everyone doesn't see marketing strategies this way.

This is my theme across the board. Since I can remember, I havenā€™t listened to others, but rather researched for myself.

I basically refuse to watch commercials because they irritate me so much. I pay for YouTube premium as a result.

Agree! Especially with trends. I've never had an urge to buy something just because "it's cool" or "everyone else has it". Even as a kid, I simply didn't want things unless I really, really wanted it.

Part of my role is online marketing. I use a system called inbound marketing to provide value for potential customers before they purchase. Traditional Marketers hate me.

When I was a kid, half the ads I saw made me too embarrassed to buy the product, even if I'd otherwise want it. "If I buy this, my peers will laugh at me for being easily manipulated". Of course, with my autistic social deficits, I failed to understand that my peers were too busy being easily manipulated to laugh at me (about that). Now ads just create a general peevishness in me.

Yes, it's very true. I have been able to recognize marketing patterns since I was in kindergarten. And furthermore, being an extreme minimalist, since I was born, commercials and marketing strategies are ineffective on me.

Iā€™ve actually been taken advantage of by SO much marketing. Esp if itā€™s a person face to face trying to rush me into a decision, I canā€™t process that quickly and I kind of just dissociate and go along with it then realize a few days later what happened because it typically takes me 3 days to process things, esp social things.

being hyperlexic as a child meant I was reading ALL the fine print. EVERYWHERE! Once I was taught to compare prices and weight (instead of size) and now I canā€™t buy things without knowingšŸ˜… even if Iā€™m paying more for less, I at least wanna know

I drive a 50 year old car, grow my own food and drink rain water. no marketing campaign can touch me.

Demand Avoidance has kept me safe from things like this - sales of things I donā€™t NEED, but rather what someone else thinks I should buy!!! I donā€™t like government, for the same reason. I donā€™t break the laws, yet I believe many laws are made for the lawmakersā€™ benefit, not for ā€œwe, the peopleā€!
