Rishiâs attitude to the disabled is horrendous and yet Rachel Reeves saying âwe are not the party for people on benefitsâ and Starmer wanting people in work means Labour arenât sympathetic. There are three types of voters: those who vote for the party irrespective of the leader, those who vote for a leader and not the party and the switchers and the latter are important for prospective candidates to focus on.

The concern I think is that all the long-term solutions to increasing support for radical populists (driven by disillusionment and desperation) are considered left wing. Wealth taxes and borrowing to field long-term investment (like, say an ambitious green investment programme); investing in the NHS and social security to reduce desperation and illness; building houses; and so on.
It's so easy for Labour to get one parliament, do nothing to solve our systemic problems, and then make way for something truly terrifying 4-8 years down the line.

It is not only an issue of a first past the post system, but on the nature of protest voting and strategic voting. It is the trick of the mind that you are always limited to the lesser evil, you cant actually vote in favour of anything.
Proportional voting systems have issues too. A minor partner in a coalition government will often have to sacrifice major parts of their platform in order to get any position of power in that government.
This is why I think that a representative democracy can only ever be tempered by frequent referenda.

A game theory analogy is, imagine a 1 mile long beach with 2 ice cream vans, then ideally each van would park 1/4 of a mile from either end so nobody has to walk more than 1/4 for an ice cream.
However in real life one of those van drivers would move slightly closer to the middle to pick a few extra customers from the opposition, so the other van would move closer to the middle too, and eventually you end up with both vans parked right in the middle of the beach. This would be normal for the 2 leading parties.
The difference this time around is the Cons have decided to move almost all the way to the right hand side end of the beach so Labour have also moved slightly right of centre to pick up as many customers as possible even though it means a longer walk for those on the left of the beach.
