It's not an "old" camera technique. It's just a camera technique.

To make Will Ferrell look bigger, wouldn't it be easier to have him stand next to them? He's bigger than most people.

Practical effects almost always look better than CGI effects

They used this technique a lot for The Lord of the Rings when the Hobbits would be in the same shot with the other characters.

Saying that forced perspective is an "old" technique is like saying that cutting paper with scissors is old

They could have done something with CGI when the movie was made originally. They Chose to use that camera technique.

Looking back, you can see ever so slightly the shade of the edges. It's hard to see but it's definitely there

Forced perspective is so cool, but sadly its more pricy than Green screen

Also in the class if you look the others were small kids about 4 feet tall, will is 6 feet tall, so using camera tricks it makes him look huge

"if they filmed this scene today, the actor would probably just be composited in on a green screen" Yes, they would for a low-budget film but still, 90% of the time if they can use practical effects, they would use it, because they look better

Buddy has a green Suit so a green screen would mess with his Suit

Note that it's not like greenscreens or video editing didn't exist back then, it's just that it was more tedious because you had to edit actual film instead of digital video, so practical effects were literally that—more practical lol

There's also things that aren't CGI but were essentially their equivalent compared to doing things live in-camera—instead of buildings sets in scale for real, they either painted or built mini versions and essentially used green or bluescreen to put the actors over them. The power of compositing! XD
