I like both ideas, but the pins especially. Many of my cleats are spaced pretty far apart, and not consistently, so a key wouldn't be practical for my setup. On the other hand, all my cleats are about the same height, so pins would work for all my holders no matter where I put them. Both are a super-simple and practical idea, thanks!

I'm planning to do a french cleat for a large "object" something like a floating tv cabinet. But the french cleat will need to be like 1in away from the wall.. should i place another large piece of wood behind the cleat on the wall side to give the 1in space or should i just add another 1x3 for the buffer?

Nice. Until you notice those youtube woodworking channels just assume everything to be exact as beeing cut by a cnc machine.

Your reality likely isnt and it wont fit or will rattle.
