Until now, Ukraine had been using the long-range missiles provided by the U.S. solely for defensive purposes. Despite repeated requests from Zelenskyy, the U.S. had refused to allow Ukraine to use its weapons to attack targets within Russian territory. That's because Russia had issued an open warning, stating that if such an attack were to occur, it would be considered as NATO's direct participation in the war. According to Russia's updated nuclear doctrine, in such a scenario, even a conventional attack could prompt Russia to use nuclear weapons in response. That’s why, until now, the U.S. had tied Ukraine’s hands. But now, with a sudden change in policy, Biden has authorized Ukraine to use U.S. missiles beyond its borders. On one hand, Trump wants to end the war, while on the other, Biden’s latest move has significantly increased the risk of the war escalating further.
