These ants literally blow themselves up to defend their colonies.
Colobopsis explodens, the exploding ant, lives in large treetop colonies in southeast asia. When their workers approach the end of their lives, their brightly colored abdomens fill with a toxic yellow glue. When enemy scouts approach their colonies, they're met by red and black patrols who shake their butts. It's a warning sign "Any fight you pick is going to be a fight to the death." And if their enemies don't back down, the exploding ants grab onto their legs, and flex their abdomens so hard that they explode, splattering the toxic glue in their bodies onto their enemies, serving their colony one last time.
It's an effective deterrent; other ants quickly learn to avoid the exploding soldiers, a few thousand ants can control territories half the size of a football field, and scientists think that we'll discover more exploding ant species in the years to come.
