In the fall of 2021, a full grown wild raccoon unexpectedly came into my house. She had squeezed in through the cat door, and basically made herself right at home.
I wound up calling her Marshmallow, and she was my dear friend for the next two and a half years. The cats even liked her.
She wasn't my pet. She came and went as she pleased. We watched a lot of movies and TV together, and we shared a lot of snacks, too. Her indoor manners were better than mine.
This past spring, someone hit her with their car on the road, just a block from my house. I found her, and I buried her.
I still really miss my sweet raccoon friend. She was genuinely one of a kind.
I love ya' Marshmallow. I miss you all the time. I will never ever forget you. 💖

The reason they're dipping their meal in the water is because they don't have any saliva glands, and it keeps it moist so it can go down and they can eat it

Maybe it's to feel things too but I'm convinced the food being cleaned in rivers and whatnot is part of what helped them survive as a species! Or if I'm wrong, I definitely wouldn't mind being educated 😊

I was taught that raccoon were their food because they don’t make enough saliva lol, wetting the food made it easier to eat.

I wish I didn't learn that they don't actually wash their food, pee food :(

In Dutch they're called "washbears"

#They sip their meal in the same water they used as a communal toilet? Yep! That's called cycling? I learned it from aquarists.
