{Wanderlust Chronicles: 5 Days as a Crew Member and Pair Figure Skater on a Cruise Ship} Performing on a cruise ship is more than just skating in shows. It is a dynamic lifestyle filled with responsibilities, routines, and unexpected moments beyond the rink. From intense workdays to moments of quiet at sea, here are five things we do as crew members and performers that most people do not know about. Day 1 Turnaround Day is the busiest day of the week. As guests disembark and new passengers arrive, the entire ship resets. Crew members work behind the scenes to ensure a seamless transition handling luggage, restocking supplies, and preparing cabins. Every department plays a role in making sure everything is spotless and ready for the next adventure. For performers, the work does not stop there. After a full day of ship operations, we step onto the ice for two evening shows. Despite the exhaustion, the energy of the performance makes it all worth it. Day 2 Guest Skating Sessions go beyond performing. As figure skaters, we also assist passengers during public skating hours. We help fit skates, ensure rink safety, and guide first-time skaters, creating a fun experience for guests. Managing ice conditions and organizing skate rentals requires attentiveness, patience, and coordination. We also assist dancers backstage, helping them with quick costume changes between numbers just as they do for us during our performances. Day 3 Port Days offer a small window of rest. While passengers explore new destinations, crew members get a few hours to recharge. Some take advantage of the gym, others step ashore for a quick break, and some simply relax on deck, enjoying the fresh ocean air. These moments, though brief, help us reset before returning to rehearsals, performances, or duties onboard. Day 4 Safety Drills are an essential part of ship life. Every crew member participates in emergency training, from muster station exercises to evacuation procedures. Drills ensure that we know how to respond to any situation at sea, reinforcing the importance of safety for both crew and guests. At the end of the day, we often have rehearsal for the show and skating practice. Day 5 Show Day is when everything comes together. Costumes are prepped, skates are sharpened, and the atmosphere is charged with excitement. The energy of the audience fuels every spin, jump, and lift. After the final bow, we unwind in different ways some enjoy a quiet moment by the ocean, others gather for a late-night meal, reflecting on the performance. Life at sea is a balance of discipline and adventure. Every role from skating to safety drills plays a part in keeping the ship running smoothly while creating unforgettable moments for both crew and guests.
