The vast majority of rowers steer well clear of weirs with good reason. But if you understand the risks you can row over them. Canoeists do it all the time. Here Stephen Walker, founder of Sculling Academy, www.optin.scullingacademy.com/ , takes on Chester weir and sculls over at high water in order to be able to row underneath the Old Dee Bridge, The Grosvenor Bridge, past Chester Race Course and under the Railway bridge that carries the London to Holyhead line. Then he sculls past Crane Bank Wharfe and The Kop to turn around eventually at the bend where the New Cut begins and Flookers Brook enters the River Dee. A little winter adventure!
Steve also shows how to calculate when it is possible to do this and how much time you've got in which to do it. Did he get back over the weir in time?
