The context of the convention is anupama Chopra asking him "will he accept he is a pan Indian star".And he is not accepting and saying the popularity he got from doing Pushpa doesn't change anything to him, because his "stuff" is in Malayalam and whatever popularity he got from pushpa have no change in the films he is doing.Those film's doesn't need pan India Stardom.If he asked about Vikram he will say the same too.He is not saying Pushpa is a bad film.

Sticking to malayalam movies must be priority because only malayalam movies have those story lines and characters that can be explored and go into the depth. But given opportunity, of a good story line and character do open the boundaries.
But yes we would like to see malayalam movies to reach national level as malayalam movie itself, not some remake. Though remakes too become a hit, but original is original.
