When you are new to backpacking especially in colder temps and adverse weather conditions, it is always best to test your gear. Usually either at home or at a location where you can easily bail out if something isn't right. I learned this lessen the hard way when I was still very new to backpacking. On a freezing night I could not stop drafts from getting in my hammock setup and had one of the most miserable nights of my life.
