Aemon Targaeryn was a really fascinating character. At the time, he was considered the last Targaeryn in the world. He actually chose to become a maester even when he was a royal and could have lived in luxury. After his father Maekar's death, he had an opportunity to leave the citadel to become the king, but he chose to remain and hence his younger brother Aegon was chosen. He also chose to go to the Night's Watch with Bloodraven out of his free will.
A simple man of knowledge, even though he was the blood of the Dragon and saw 6 kings in his lifetime.
