Kimono sleeves are very long for fashion and to be as pockets, but they do get in your way sometimes. Thatā€™s why Japanese people used to do TasukigakĆ©, using these strings to tie up their sleeves. Let me teach you how to do this. You first hold one end in your mouth. You bring the string under your arm and behind your back. The string goes over your other shoulder, under the other arm, and behind your back again. At this point, there should be an X on your back. Tie the two ends of the string together and move the knot to the back. Once you get used to it, it only takes about 10 seconds to do this. Please check out my online lessons if you want to learn katana techniques.

It's a beautiful detail animated in Studio Ghibli's Spirited Away. Didn't have to be animated, they could have designed the character costume to not need this, but animators attention to detail and cultural sensitivity absolutely makes that movie.

It's funny because these can be compared to western trouser braces too keep your trousers up and prevent them from sagging but also keeps the usually quite loose fitted shirts back then more in control.

Beyond keeping sleeves up, it also straightens posture, holds the shoulders back, and somewhat eases the back pain I get when leaning over a sink.

our women in morocco do the same thing when doing chores etc!!! lit the same technique and itā€™s still used to this day by women in the traditional way, but it ALSO evolved to an accessory and women nowadays wear chunky gold chains in the shape of this X around shoulders and back !

It explains where Mai Shiranui's back ropes come from while simultaneously makes it an ironic character design quirk since her outfit has no sleeves

The first time I saw this was on Spirited Away,
blew my mind!

It's like switching a switch from casual mode to racing mode or something

Yes! I love the look tasukis give to kimonos! I learned it from Chihayafuru, people use it to hold their sleeves in Karuta matches! It makes the look so cool while keeping the elegance!ā¤

Iā€™m very glad you uploaded a video on this. As many people here have said Iā€™ve heard of this and only found maybe 1 or 2 tutorials for this technique but only on fully Japanese websites or with Japanese text descriptions. Very wonderful to see you show more people this common and yet hard to find techniques!
