As a black belt instructor myself, I would question a school where instructor is NOT rolling

Our black belt instructor literally rolls with everybody, we call him out he calls us out its a great time

Dude, a black belt instructor who refuses to roll with their students is wild to me. It's definitely not how I was brought up. In the same vein, a student being rude about it to their instructor is also crazy though. You definitely gotta ask nicely.

I love rolling with my instructor. He demolishes me in the kindest manner. I never feel nervous about getting injured or hurt when I roll with him. He knows how to modulate his game to meet you at your level.

100% accurate. Like you said, respect in your approach is everything!

This is good to know, I go to a fairly small gym where we have 1 black belt, 1 brown belt, 1 blue belt, and 4 white belts so usually you roll with everyone at that practice. I know more used to being told by my black belt instructor to roll with him than I am asking if I can, so this is good information if I ever go somewhere with more people.

When I was newer it is awesome rolling with the black belts and brown belts because they would help teach you through the whole roll

Beyond just the ego/respect angle, something also worth considering: a black belt probably has 10-20 years of injury accumulation, and is usually not in their twenties!

Great way to handle it. Of course I feel like a good instructor should roll with his students. But he is still your teacher and as such, should be treated with respect.
I'm a good blue belt at our gym and I have a good relationship with my Coach. We like to smack talk and roll with each other. Of course I know he is going to win, if he is serious. But I'll still be like "Come on old man, I won't hurt you", and he'll be casually telling me what I'm doing wrong while he folds me like a T-Shirt. It's all in good faith and we know and trust each other, we've known each other for years now.
That is not the kind of relationship you get with your Coach if you're new

I wouldn't roll with anyone who points at me raises there voice etc, respect is earned from me regardless of ur belt and standing in the gym. My coach would probably have the same outlook

I don't have to ask. They demand it.

Ask everyone nicely.
Also never saw a roll be refused due to rank.
Very peculiar and would make me reconsider going back to that gym.

I have to imagine most of us do this because we love it. I cant imagine ever not wanting to roll permanently unless very serious injury demanded it. That being said i think most black belts actually want to roll.

Open game to ragdolling all students !!!! Cracks me right up when my white belts call me out . When my purple or blues try a sub on me or sweep I use the same sub or sweep on repeate !

My coach was one of the first people I rolled with. Basically to protect myself and others. Not that im subbing anyone but its easy to hurt yourself and others(mostly other white belts) when you are fresh and ignorant. He'd rather let me make those mistakes with him.

Where I train I’m the only white belt there but even when asking to roll I’ve always staid super respectful to everyone when asking to roll

I've only been at it 2 months I don't really ask to roll often but my coaches often call me out and they are the only ones I trust myself going more full on. I can feel myself learning and using my instincts alot more when against them as I trust them to sub or pin me in a controlled way.

I think a good blackbelt is the safest Sparring partner for a new white belt. I also think everybody should roll with anybody. That's normal. 🤷🏾‍

My main black belt instructor doesnt roll all the time due to trying keep the body from breaking. He will teach and then watch mostly, but he does roll with higher belts.

He does allow his browns, and purple to instruct and they do roll with students every class.

I rolled 1 time with my black belt instructor so far (im only 6 months in) and he let me get mount and attempt a mounted triangle. He then proceeded to say "nah" and taught me that I am a bug on his windshield.
