The song was written by Robert Hazard. Hazard gladly turned it over to Lauper, but was entitled to royalties and later said that he literally made a living off of it. He was a rock star in his own right, as the front man of Robert Hazard and Heroes, a neo-punk band from Philadelphia that enjoyed huge underground success. Sadly, Hazard passed away in 2008 after battling pancreatic cancer.
Fun fact: Lauper also had another big hit, āTime After Time,ā that was written and arranged by another Philly rock act, The Hooters. Rob Hyman and Eric Bazilian originally wrote the song for their band, but eventually gave Lauper recording rights, and even sang background vocals for her on it. The song is still on The Hootersā concert playlist to this day.

Personally I see the male version as a guy who has been in so many relationships or just interactions with a girl messing with his feelings/playing games with him. And heās just trying to feel important because in the later part of that version his mother said that heās still number one showing his family still cares about him. I see it as a menās mental support song than anything misogynistic

Very subtle changes created a different story. Having the conversation with the mother first, then the father gives the mother authority and switching from the father being 'fortunate' (edit: I thought it said 'unfortunate' at first š¬) to the singer and mother being unfortunate (meaning they as women are limited in certain ways) makes it more about living fully rather than just messing around. It does help so much that the singer is femal

Thought she was gonna sing the original male version so we could hear the difference
Edit: so I got curious & found the original lyrics. It doesnāt really read as misogynistic to me, but maybe Iām not good at reading into the deeper meaning of lyrics
When I read:
āSome guys take a beautiful girl
They try to hide her away from the rest of the world
All my girls have got to walk in the sun
'Cause girls just wanna have fun
Yeah, girls just wanna have funā
It read more to me like the singer understands women are seen as possessions to men but recognizes they just wanna have a good time like anyone else
āI know your love for him
Is deep as day is long
I know you'd never be the
Thing to do him wrong
But when I knock on the door
I'm close now, you could come
It really wasn't important
'Cause girls just wanna have fun
Yeah, girls just wanna have funā
Now this could be interpreted as sexual, with āIām close now, you could comeā but it sounds like maybe he had a one night with a girl and wanted to go deeper into a relationship, as suggested when he sings he knows how deep a womanās love can be āas day is longā, but he also understands their encounter wasnāt important to her cause itās just for fun. This could also loop back to the beginning when he says āoh mother dear, youāre still my number oneā cause he hasnāt yet found his number one girl yet (a girl ready to settle).
Sorry for long edit š
