This is very necessary for the overtaking lane. You can speed up to 160 in no time and get passed the slow campervans, unless your driving to Tekapo in which case you kinda stuck.

Vtec actually dates back to the 1930s
They just didn't call it that because it wasn't electric control
Some ww2 tanks had a 2 stage cam, one for starting and low rpm and a second stage for higher rpm because they wouldn't start on the second larger cam profile
They were often manually changed over via a lever the crew would operate hence why it wasn't vtec because no electric control

The pin sounds like a very probable point of failure over time. Fast moving stuff coupled just with a pin while moving that fast...kinda sounds like it will be unreliable down the road.
