I came to know a Marines that had fought there. He became a very good friend. He talked some about "The 'Canal." Okinawa and Korea, but he never mentioned anything about Tarawa. Not long before he died, he gave me the book "A Special Valor" by Richard Wheeler. In the chapter on Tarawa, he wrote in there the names of 3 friends he lost on the atoll. that was all he ever said.

My great grandfather fought on Tarawa as a 30 caliber machine gunner and lost a leg during the battle.

During the battle of Tarawa my grandfather and great uncle were boilers mates on USS Independence. When the ship was struck by a torpedo they were trapped below deck. They both survived and later my great uncle introduced his friend from the Navy to his sister.

Although the price of freedom comes at the sacrifice of our fallen brothers " Marines" , who without question , stood in the face of all eminent danger and without hesitation and made the ultimate Sacrifice !! And you may ask yourself, why ?? For his brothers , Marines to his left and his right !! Thank you all for your service and Marine Corps traditions that will stand, " Forever" !! Your sacrifice will never be forgotten, and I will never forget the price that was paid for the freedom myself and my family enjoy to this very day!!
