It’s called the Jal Binayak Temple, or Water Ganesha Temple, located near the Bagmati River in Kathmandu, Nepal. What makes this temple special is that Bhairava Baba is shown sitting on the shoulders of Ganesha Bhagawan. Actually, the Bhairava Baba Vigraha is on the outside, and Ganesha Bhagawan is hidden underneath it. Inside this huge statue, there’s sacred water, which is considered very holy. The history of this temple is quite fascinating. It’s connected to the Bagmati River and a snake named Karkotaka Naga. Long ago, the locals wanted to farm near the river, but Karkotaka Naga wouldn’t let them. So, they prayed to God Shiva for help. God Shiva sent his son Ganesha Ji to solve the problem. Ganesha Ji fought with Karkotaka for seven days and finally defeated him. After the battle, Ganesha Ji gave Karkotaka Naga a pond nearby to live in. This pond is located 2 km away from the temple and is called Taudha Lake. There is also a temple dedicated to Karkotaka Naga near the lake.
Jal Binayak is one of the four main Ganesh temples in the Kathmandu Valley, along with Chandra Binayak, Surya Binayak, and Ashok Binayak.
