6,000 Crucified: Rome’s Vengeance After the Spartacus Revolt
The slave rebellion that began in 73 BC, known in history as the "Spartacus Rebellion," was one of the largest slave uprisings in Roman history. Spartacus and around 70 of his companions managed to escape from the gladiator school in Capua. This escape quickly grew into a large-scale uprising, and thousands of slaves soon joined the rebels. Initially, the rebellious slaves operated in small groups, using guerrilla tactics against Roman forces. Rome initially underestimated the slave rebellion and saw it as insignificant. The Roman forces sent to subdue the rebels suffered consecutive defeats at the hands of Spartacus's army. Only after these setbacks did the Roman Senate realize the scale of the uprising. However, they were eventually crushed by one of Rome's seasoned generals, Marcus Licinius Crassus.

The end of the rebellion was both dramatic and brutal: Crassus employed a highly ruthless tactic to completely quell the revolt. He ordered the crucifixion of 6,000 surviving slaves along the Via Appia, one of Rome’s major roads, as a stark warning. Although the exact fate of Spartacus is not clearly known, some sources suggest he was killed in battle.
