How Many Sides Does The Great Pyramid Of Giza Have? Because It Isn't Four
The Great Pyramid of Giza, one of the most iconic structures in the world, is often thought to have four sides. However, this is a misconception. The pyramid actually has eight sides, a fact that wasn’t confirmed until 1926 when British Air Force pilot P. Groves photographed the pyramid from above. From this vantage point, it was possible to see that each of the pyramid’s four faces is slightly indented along its central line, creating a concave shape.
This subtle concavity, which is not visible from the ground, transforms the pyramid into a concave octagonal structure rather than a standard square pyramid. According to Akio Kato from Kanagawa University, Japan, this design likely contributes to the pyramid’s stability and longevity. The inclined layers and reinforced base help the pyramid withstand natural forces such as gravitational compression, earthquakes, and rainstorms. Over the past 4,500 years, the pyramid has endured severe rainstorms more than 500 times, yet it remains standing strong.
The concave design may have been an intentional engineering choice to enhance the pyramid’s durability, or it could have been a fortunate accident. Regardless, this feature highlights the advanced engineering skills of the ancient Egyptians. Despite their expertise, some sealed corridors and rooms within the pyramid were abandoned due to instability, indicating that even the best engineers faced challenges.
