These elected politicians are protesting a bill suggested by the ruling party. It is regarding suggested modifications to the tiriti (or treaty) of Waitangi - partially recognized as New Zealand/Aotearoa's founding document - but not by all people of the country. The haka or ngeri here starts with the words 'Ka Mate, Ka Mate, Ka Ora, Ka Ora' - which means 'I die, I die, I live, I live'. It echoes an historical life or death moment for a Rangatira (chief) called te Rauparaha when he was being chased by another tribe. Look it up! A sector of the new NZ Government wants to change the treaty wording and this challenge expresses that they are SO not happy about that. This is a rather simplified explanation but there you go, it is all online if you wish to know more about the parameters of it. It is currently sparking a lot of protest including a hikoi (a march) up and down the country to parliament by many who are opposed to it and see it as distrustful.

I am not sure what they were protesting, but they sure did it with style.
