Corhyn wasn't always just a sheep.
He also communicated with the greater will and was given a vision of what must be done to fix the problem (burning the erdtree), but the other sheep couldn't accept that, and he became their victim. They gouged the eyes that saw the vision and imprisoned him probably until he died and got resurrected like us in the lands between. After all that happening to him and still holding his faith he must have felt an insane amount of guilt and thought very lowly of himself because his own eyes received this "blasphemous" vision while he didn't know that he was more connected to the greater will than all the others.
And now after all that he's been through, as he's still holding his faith, Goldmask, the man that he looks up to and respects the most, comes to basically tell him that he was right the first time. And the faith he struggled to hold all this time was for nought.
No wonder he felt wildly conflicted, to the point of going insane!
