As I mentioned in the DM having their creatures one shotted doesn’t hurt them because they’ve got a hundred more to use. If it happens to a player that player isn’t just out of a character but out of the game for an extended period of time, plus when players devices a plan to one shot a creature they’ve likely worked extremely hard to gather up the resources and abilities to do so, while the DM is inconvenienced by one shot mechanics the players are hindered by them when it happens to them.

If there’s a way of avoiding it like say those major AOEs from GOWR where they slowly and obviously charge up attacks that you can interrupt, I think it’s fine. Learn the trick once and it’ll never be an issue again cause remember, when you’re fighting a boss, it’s not just testing your skills and abilities, it’s also learning the enemies ans how to circumvent getting your ass kicked.

Dnd enjoyer here: I personally dont use one shot kill mechanics but i have used one shot drop to 0 mechanics, they were exclusively for the bbeg to show up, talk sht, then incapacitate them and leave, it always came with autosucceeding death saves and always meant "a boss fight is coming, you have time to prepare"

I am a fan of one-shotting enemies, actually. This is a good way to create interesting battles in your game. It makes maneuvers and disable mechanics more useful, and makes players think some turns ahead.
But one-shots have to be telegraphed super clearly. 'This club is so menacing, it seems it can strike you down with ONE hit.' Defeated players should not be instantly dead, of course, and the party must be powerful enough to still win after losing one or two combatants.

I'm playing Elden Ring and the Final Boss of the DLC (not saying who for spoiler reasons) technically doesn't OHKO you, but does so much damage that it might as well until you max out (or at least get to +15 on Scadutree Fragments) your Scadutree Fragments. Which means you should explore more and come back later when you're at least 60 Vigor and have +15 Scadutree Fragments.

As someone who is in the ttrpg space, and who often gets dnd and other ttrpg content, "one-shot" has an entirely different meaning, that of a single game session thats basically a short story that wraps up at the end of the single 4 hour session. When you said that they were bad i was so confused for about 15 seconds trying to figure out what you were trying to say about them. A very funny unintentional interaction there lol
