Subscribe to Law By Mike for more law and life tips! I just uploaded a new long form video! Check it out by clicking the link above this video's title, and let me know what you think Fun fact: Treasure Trove Law doesn’t require that it be buried underground, just that it’s hidden and the owner be unknown or long gone.

There was a case where the lady was a waitress and someone left her ten thousand dollars anonymously in a to go box at her table. She was struggling financially.
But to do the right thing she called the police and turned it in. The police tried to keep it. Wouldn’t give it back. Then claimed there was an odor of marijuana from it.
Then they tried to negotiate and keep 90 percent but give her 10.
She finally got the money. Unacceptable.

Fun fact: if you find money and contact police, they will either say the owner was found or pocket it as a "seizure"

If you call the police, you will never see that money again.

One time I found $300 on the ground. I showed my dad and he took it saying he was gonna give it to the police but he kept it

Good life advice: If you find $10,000 on the ground, no you didn't.

Most local laws insist you bring the money to local enforcement so they can keep it. When I was a kid another neighborhood kid found a bike and brought it to the police station. They told him if the bike wasnt claimed in 90 days he could claim it. He came back in 90 days and no one had claimed it. But, mysteriously, it wasn't there!

Report it to the cops so they can say "he only would've had this for criminal purposes" and then take it under civil asset forfeiture

My professional advice: keep it; don’t spend it; if they find that you have it; act like you didn’t know anything, and give it back. After one year, then perhaps, you can spend it. Just gotta be smart.

Can’t prove it belonged to someone else if I don’t talk about it.

My tax professor once said, "if you find a box full of cash then the IRS doesn't know it exist. So if it doesn't exist, then it doesnt exist, if you know what I mean.. "

If I ever find 10k on the ground, I’m not telling a soul.

If you ever find a considerable amount of cash, keep it, shut up and check of GPS trackers before driving straight home. 'On a need-to-know basis' is the only law that matters

I know here in Canada, if you leave your stuff un attended, and un secured on public property, then thats your loss.
Cause its fair game.
(Within reason, example; A car parked legally does not qualify, a bundle of cash does.

Don't talk to cops, they never have your best interests in mind. Just don't be dumb, don't spend beyond your visible means.

If you find 10k in a briefcase 100% cops wouldn't even look for the owner. It'd be their money because "it was probably going to be used for criminal activity."

Just don't spend it all at once.

Just take the money, tell nobody. As long as you’re not making any huge deposits, or large purchases, you should be alright.
