It went back to theaters after he made Star Wars. So a good amount of that money is because of Star Wars. Doesn't take away from his genius. He made Star Wars after all.

Watching american graffiti is what convinced me George is a genius; Star Wars is a perfect monomyth; but AG is THE perfect ensemble film. If you like stuff like Love Actually or Pulp Fiction, both owe a LOT to AG.

You really need to watch the featurette. George Lucas explains that he bankrolled a guy $10,000 to write a screenplay based on the treatment that he wrote with Coppola's encouragement. The screenplay was gritty and dirt ball and nothing like the movie. George Lucas ended up hiring the screenwriters and he in turn provided them with the original treatment and stories from his youth. The screenwriters, which were a couple in real life, had their own ideas, too, since they grew up in that era. I guess my point is can you imagine being paid $10,000 in what 1970 1971 and the movie going nowhere? That's like at least $70,000 now. I actually read the original $10,000 screenplay... It's at the motion picture academy of arts and sciences library in Los Angeles. It was awful.

For me, American Graffiti is Lucas's best movie, better than Star Wars!!!

So 5 million dollars is low budget by today's standards? I wonder where an ambitioned filmmaker not born in a millionaire's household can raise all that money?

Where did George Lucas get the money for his first low Budget films? Did he convince a studio to give him the money by presenting his ideas and his vision or did he earn that money by working (as an editor for other directors on other films for example).

I mean: It is not easy to earn 5 million dollars when working for about ten years in a regular conventional job, is it?
