Union Minister Nitin Gadkari announced that the road transport ministry is working on a uniform toll policy to ease travel on National Highways and address commuter dissatisfaction with high tolls. The policy aims to streamline toll charges and improve the overall road-user experience.

Gadkari highlighted that India’s highway infrastructure is now on par with the US. He emphasized the upcoming introduction of a barrier-less, GNSS-based toll collection system to enhance efficiency and convenience for commuters.

In response to rising toll charges, Gadkari acknowledged growing discontent among National Highway users but reassured that the ministry is addressing complaints seriously, especially those raised on social media.

The toll revenue has significantly increased, touching ₹64,809 Cr in 2023-24, but only a fraction is contributed by private car users, who make up 60% of the traffic. The government is determined to improve both toll collection systems and the construction pace of highways, aiming to surpass 37 km/day in highway construction this year.
