I'm not excusing Claire for not telling her children about her teenage mistakes but I think I understand where she's coming from, Claire wants to be a good example for her children and is ashamed of her past actions but she doesn't want them to make the same mistakes she did and to be better than her.

What’s the problem with her not wanting to let her kids know who she really is? I mean my mum does it and she uses her experience to tell us what is like. And from there she tells us if it’s a good choice or not. Of course, whether we chose to do it or not is not up to her. But it certainly is trustworthy.
