Camping in CA in 2024? There are changes coming to stop “no shows”. Should more states do this? #rv

This should be nationwide. Some people game the system and reserve the best sites for the entire year only to pick and choose the weekends they will actually be staying and cancel the rest at the last moment. This is unfair to the people that would like to stay for the entire week but can't because the weekends are reserved by people that had no intention of staying.

Thank you Jason for the information about California’s campground.

I have mixed feelings. It seems like a step in the right direction, but it still doesn't stop the A-holes who reserve their spots for the entire year and just show up when they feel like it, which locks the rest of us out of the system. I think the non-refundable deposit needs to be steeper, and limiting the number of reservations you can have in the system at one time might help. I'm not an expert on the subject, and it seems like better minds could come up with a better solution than this.

Much as I think CA is a total mess in general, IF they can actually follow through effectively with these campground regulations, I will applaud them.

Yes, these regulations should be adopted pretty much nationwide.

Not getting a refund is not enough to squash no-shows. State parks need to start implementing serious financial penalties for this practice. If they insist on charging far below market value for desirable sites, that's the only way. I'm tired of going to a campground that I know is fully booked online, only to see empty sites all over the place. I think that practice ends right quickly to the tune of a $250 penalty, and if that didn't, $500 probably would. Make it easy to cancel and even offer one warning, but people need to take booking a coveted site seriously, and many do not currently. Stay limits also need to be shortened. State parks are not the place for 14-day stays. That isn't in the spirit of what a state park is for. 3-4 days should be more than enough time to enjoy all but the largest state parks. They aren't places to live in.
