That's why as a Korean it was really stressful visiting major touristy cities in europe like Paris because i'm not used to having to pay attention to my belongings lol

Abandoned bags like that would also cause suspicion here in Europe, as a possible terrorist threat. Or at least in large crowded places like a train station (and understandably so)

We had a similar experience in Japan! My husband forgot his backpack with money, passport, cameras and so on
we reported at the train station. One hour later they called us to go to the next stop, because they have found it with everything else in it! Nothing was missing. As Brazilians we were very very surprised (and sad, `cause it would never be like this in Brazil, unfortunately).

I wouldn't say anywhere in Europe. Finland is like this.

The only 2 things that WILL get stolen regardless in South Korea: bicycles & umbrellas 😆

People do that in Glasgow and it really surprised me. It's not the biggest city in Europe, but it's also not a small country town with zero crime

This is extreme, but generally things are good in Germany too.
Outsiders naturally tend to congregate at tourist palaces in EU but is normal German small town and villages, if you drop something in a public place, there is high chance you will find it lying there the next day, or someone would have taken i to the "lost and found" counter.
I and my wife have lost (forgetfully left) expensive phones in train and bus respectively. We both got them back from lost & found counters within 24 hours.

This one time, I saw a 20€ stuck to the notice board at my workplace with a note saying "was found on the kitchen floor". It was there for about a week.

I remember a comment from someone who moved from the US to someplace like Scotland, and he said he wasn’t aware of the hyper-vigilance he had to maintain in the states, until he moved somewhere he could finally relax.

We just aren’t aware of the energy we put into these things!

It’s like that in Taiwan too, I personally think that’s nice 🙂. Enjoy your stay, hope you get to visit other parts of Asia

Not only could it get stolen, it would trigger a “see something say something” response and likely be reported as a suspicious package and be suspected of being a bomb or something

This is a norm in a lot of East Asian cities. I think it’s just that security cameras are everywhere, if you steal people’s bags in a shop, you are most likely gonna get caught so people don’t do that. The most crimes in East Asian cities are sexual assault instead of pickpocketing

Same in Japan. I once forgot my backpack in the tram. Just had to wait for it to make a full round, jumped back in, and took my backpack out again. My only concern was, that someone might have taken my backpack to the lost and found.

Have a great time, I miss the place sometimes. The cultural attitude about this is just very different in Korea and Japan, also the consequences for even just small theft like this in the country are massive compared to other places.

I've seen people do this (and have myself done this) in Korea to sort of "reserve" a spot at a cafe or convenience store. We'll leave our smartphones on the table and nobody takes them, it's just a sign that that spot is taken. While I'm on the topic of convenience stores, here's something that many places in Europe and Asia allow that the US does not: open containers of alcohol outdoors! You can grab a full on bottle of beer or soju and pound it at a table outside of a convenience store if you want to. Not allowed back in New York where I'm from! Bottles of alcohol are often put into paper bags in the US when sold, for this reason.

Hi, American living in Korea here 👋 I see delivery trucks parked with the back door open, packages exposed, and no one bothers them. No one vandalizes buildings or property or vehicles. I own a bookstore where it’s self checkout, so I don’t even need to be there in person - people can browse and pay on their own. It’s because we have tons of CCTV and you will be caught immediately if you try to commit crimes 😅 but also there is also a culture of accountability - we just feel like if it’s not ours, we shouldn’t bother it. If you find a lost credit card or phone or something on the ground, we have lost and found in many places or neighborhoods like mine have online forums so if someone loses something they will take a picture and say hey can you help me find this? And it usually gets returned. It’s pretty amazin
