No one knows why Sisyphus was being punished lmao. He cheated death and tricked hades TWICE, so Hades put him in the underworld and cursed him to push the boulder to the top but never make it, though in some interpretations he also told Sisyphus that if he does make it to the top then he can escape the underworld again, which is why he keeps trying.

The stupid misunderstanding that people got out of this is that they think Sisyphus was actually originally written as a man who is happy in pushing a boulder. That is not the case at all. Sisyphus certainly isnāt happy otherwise he wouldnāt be among the punished in the underworld. His happiness is a metaphor for humanity, not a statement about his own experiences

Interesting thing, Sisyphus does not need to push the boulder up the hill. He is told that if he pushes it to the top and it stays there then he is able to be taken out of Tartarus and is given life back. Sisyphus continues to roll the boulder since he wants that addition of more life, he wants to spite death again (yes he has done this before)
