Thirty or 40 years ago I would have disagreed with you strenuously. However, now after 50+ years of lifting I’m looking at my second back surgery just shy of 70. Same surgeries as Ronnie Coleman. Always did heavy 4’s & 5’s and no family history of spinal problems and always NO juice. Even after the 1st back surgery I went back to squats of 405 x 15-20 reps in my 60’s. I now realize I could have accomplished my goals without resorting to extremes. So unless you are set on competing in Powerlifting events, limit your high weight squats and deadlifts. I could be in a lot less pain and be much more functional if I had only lifted smarter. It’s entirely up to you!

For me it's safer and better to Squat with dumbells. I use two 40 lb dumbells in front of me, or you could use one.
