It's important to note that there is no separate word for cousin, half-brothers/sisters, or step-brothers/sisters in Hebrew or Aramaic. So after translation it is also very possible those were cousins.

Let’s ponder on Matt 13:55 … “is this not the carpenter’s son?” Since Joseph is already dead for at least two decades by this point, why would people still call him “the carpenter’s son” if his “brothers” were actually step-brothers from a past marriage of Joseph’s? Makes no sense.
