i suppose it depends on if you're talking about a chicken egg or an egg in general, which the fossil record shows existing far earlier than the animal we call a "chicken." That does beg the question though, where in the timeline does that creature suddenly become a chicken? It's like, when does bread in a toaster become toast? Is there an objective measurement of "toast?" Is it dependent on total moisture content, or a change in it? Is it a structural or textural requirement? Perhaps color, temperature, or odor? So many questions.

There are a few ways of thinking about it but my favourite is:

If the question is: "Which came first, the chicken or the egg?" Then the answer is the egg since animals have been laying eggs since almost the beginning of animals as we know it. (yes yes mitosis existed way before that but it doesn't invalidate the answer)

But if the question is: "Which came first, the chicken or the chicken egg?"
Then the answer is the chicken, because... well obviously.

There's also the sciency answer of the chicken coming from a chicken like ancestor yada yada yoda (hehe). But I like the other one more, it stays within the spirit of the question.

It was obviously the egg, but not a chicken egg.

We were asked this in 3rd year bio - by then we knew the obvious answer that one absolutely came first ... by several million years.

The egg came first, and began what is known as the chicken. We know this, because when it comes to what'll come last. That, is the chicken.

I was there. The chicken kept splitting painfully in half, then one day said ,screw this !!! And played an egg. Survival of the fittest be damned!!

I think that the digestive tract came first, in the form of tube worms at the bottom of the oceans. Because aren't we all just a digestive tract surrounded by ever increasingly better abilities to efficiently provide for said digestive tract? So I say that the chicken came first before it laid its first egg, but it didn't look so much as a chicken.
