The problem is that people are too shallow on a topic like that. A character does one good thing and people seem to forget everything bad that character has done before.
Snape didn't show remorse for what he did at all. The only reason why he changed sides was literally Lily's death. If she wasn't killed he would have never changed sides.
Yes, he helped to protect Harry but not because it was the right thing to do. He did it because Harry is Lily's son and he hated him for being James'.
He was cruel to every student he didn’t like.
Granted, he had a lot of resentment because of his own childhood. But that doesn't justify everything he's done.
He isn't evil but he isn't good either. He is a grey character. I think Snape is an amazing character because he is so controversial.

Honestly Snape is a great character worthy of being a favorite. He was not a good person, but he is complex, and his motivations are multilayered and definitely interesting enough to be someone's favorite character. But yeah I'd argue all day with anyone who said they liked him because he's a redeemed bad guy or something. He never stopped being a bad guy even if he did side with the good guys for the second half of his life.

But Snape didn’t sacrifice his life for the cause?? He just got murdered during a conversation with Voldemort because his master ran out of use for him?? The only part of his death that went to the cause was giving Harry his memories to view, the same memories that encouraged Harry to sacrifice himself…
