This is the mystery of the ages! Another example is The Hollies (He Ain’t Heavy He’s My Brother) they had Scottish brogues, but when they sang they were African-American soul singers. πŸ˜‚

Well a lot of British singers train their selves in the last 5 decades are so to sound less British in their music, I think the British Invasion back in the '60s and '70s but I have listened to a lot of English singers in earlier times and they sound very British. British singers music start becoming very popular in America they became more Americanized and a lot of British musicians are expired by African-American earlier music also.

Because they know where the music comes from, and if anything, they sound like more like southern American black folk, if anything. If you listen to the beatles or the Stones when they first came out, you can really hear it!

Because, being such huge fans of American music, it's only natural for them to imitate the way Americans sing.

Once on the Merv Griffin show (Yep! I’m that old) a comedian named Bobby Lee joked. β€œwake an Englishman in the middle of the night he’ll have a thick accent. But put a microphone in front of him accent is totally gone.
Thanks for a forgotten memory 😊

The only UK singers I remember from my childhood who sounded like they were from the UK were Lady Sovereign, Bloc Party, The Kooks, and Arctic Monkeys.

That was funny but it make sense why they didn’t sound British, in America we probably think it is a comedy or album. πŸ˜†

Think it depends on the singers type of voice as opposed to where they originate from.
If you think about the track The House of the Rising Sun by the Animals, Eric Burdon the singer sounds very bluesy, soulful, nothing like his NE England home, and when he spoke he still had a heavy NE accent. His singing voice wasn't Americanised in any way, and many hearing it for the first time assumed he was a black blues singer only to be surprised it was a 5' 6" white lad from a city in England.
