the closest theory i've seen to this is that he died from the gunshot wound in the hospital and he woke up (bc of the virus) and is still himself. maybe they somehow knew and decided to keep tabs on him. not sure but it's a fun theory

If Rick was tested with something before he woke from the coma that would be the twist of the century. It would also explain the helicopter that kept appearing in the first few seasons. Looking back at it, it almost seems it may have led the herd that took Hershelโs farm straight to him to maybe see if they can get him to get bit. Very improbable but also not that implausible.
