Did you know that during the 1981 AIDS epidemic, gay men who were hospitalized or even just on the street with aids, being denied medical care simply because they were gay, so lesbian women stepped up and started donating blood, and even taking on the role of hospice nurses, and they were the only people who would touch them!

I work in the laboratory of a blood bank. We screen all of the blood components for disease from everyone who donates. It's standard practice. Doesn't matter who it came from. I'm glad this was finally changed. We always need donors! (Slightly off topic, but we really need more black donors please!)

I remember once I was with a group of friends and said we should go donate blood (being young and full of blood), then I learned about that shitty restriction when half the group said they couldn't donate blood. The history of blood donation, especially the involvement of Dr. Charles Richard Drew, is a must read

in canada too. they had a scandal of hiv infected blood in the 80s. my friend had a transfusion in this timed period and had to have so much testing.
they pretended to be more lax with the rules. but it says you have to stay celibate for 6m before donating if you have 🍑 fun time. it’s still very restrictiv

I’m glad to know that gay people can donate blood now. I was 16 when the blood drive for my school told me I couldn’t donate after taking their screening quiz. I marked that I had homosexual sex, and they asked me personally if that was consensual or nonconsensual, as if that would matter in regards to the spread of STIs. I told them it was consensual of course.
Like if my homosexual sex was nonconsensual, they still naught consider taking my blood. What’s the point? Legal discrimination
Later I found out my gay friends just lied and said they weren’t gay. What’s the harm? They’re already checking the blood to make sure it’s healthy. Banning gay people from donating is just discriminatory. Straight people can have STI’s!

I am a phlebotomist and I used to work at a blood donation organization. I despised having to review the donation criteria with people regarding this scenario. The amount of people that lied about getting a tattoo and travelling outside the country was astronomical. The insane amount of testing that the blood goes through anyway should have done away with the male sexuality question decades ago. Asshats.
