Pollen under the microscope! 🌺🔬These are hibiscus pollen grains.

The spines on the surface of each grain is referred to as the “echinate” pattern. The spines allow pollen grains to adhere easily onto the insect’s body and its tiny hair-like structures (setae) to transfer them to the female flower/parts.

These spines can also be found on pollen grains from the sunflower family (Asteraceae), Morning Glory family, which includes Sweet potato (Convolvulaceae), Mallow, (Malvaceae) and some of the members in the gourd family (Cucurbitaceae)

Magnification 40X and 100X.
