I learned about this trick from a Fretboard Journal article with Wilco and Jeff Tweedy mentioned this. This is great for vintage guitars and expensive guitars because you can use the OEM strap buttons.
Usually I use Dunlop Strap Locks (I loop my cable through the strap button and the nice thing about Dunlops is that they don't press the cable against the body like other strap locks do and original strap buttons) and that works great depending on the guitar because you don't have issues with.tge cable marring the finish. The more acoustic a guitar is (mainly acoustics, some hollow bodies) the less ideal the Dunlops are because they can introduce some extra noise based on the strap thickness and how much you move when you play. This is where the Grolsch locks come in. They work great with just about all (not sure how great they will work on plastic Danelectro strap buttons) OEM strap buttons.
The Grolsch locks also buys you time to save if you do want to buy a better set of strap locks as well as if you want to keep the guitar. I also like the look of the red stopper as well.
Thanks again Jeff Tweedy!😎👍✨

I did this back in the day. There's a little music shop near me selling these as strap locks with the tag line "If ye know, ye know". Always makes me chuckle. 👍
