Ginger is also something that can be grown in most temperate climates. Unlike most others, that only do well in tropical or semitropical places.

Fun fact, in the Netherlands (historically a spice trade powerhouse) to this day when something is expensive we call it "peperduur" which literally translates to "as expensive as pepper."

Nutmeg was considered so valuable, whole wars were fought and whole kingdoms annexed over it's trade

Also very common as a spice, since it was cheap and most peasants grew at least a bit for their own use, garlic.

The fact that vanilla is used to mean plain shows how good we have it. One of the most expensive, historically sought after spices, and we use it to mean boring and plain.

It's really interesting how the famous spices end up kind of getting blended into our Christmas/holiday/ pumpkin mix

My six-times great grandfather and grand uncle were spice traders. I run a spice shop. There's just something so cool about spices

Ginger is my favorite and it's apparently really good for you. Next time you have an upset stomach, try a small piece. 😊 I think there are like over 150 varieties

Frankly, a lot of the recipes from 1800s and prior taste more like potpourri than actual food. It’s almost like they try to flex their wealth by over spicing foods. Think 1800s Christmas cookies, they’re straight up potpourri.

Me realizing that “Traditional food” often means the stuff the average citizen would eat at certain events.

Nutmeg and mace: the only two spices that come from the same plant.

(In ancient Rome, a fistful of peppercorns had roughly the same value as a HOUSE.)

Its crazy because half the things you mentioned I grow in my garden. If they could have just got some seeds to plant them.
