Prediction: Nobody in these comments who says "MUH BORE SNAKE" has a video of a 2.5 inch group at 1,000 yards on their channel.

I avoid all of this by not cleaning the barrels 🤷‍♂️

A decent cleaning rod has a free floating handle. That way the patch catches the rifling and it twists itself as long as you are pushing by the floating handle the rod will twist all on its own.

This is true. most people including myself when I was new to cleaning a firearm are not shown a better way. most videos you see show someone ramming a patch through the barrel and done. I learned this method from someone at my local shop. Well explained

Going out on a limb here, but gonna say most hunters put less than 10 rounds through their rifle a year. Once sighted in they will shoot three shots annually to make sure it is still on and then during the season maybe 2 or three. The only reason they have a cleaning kit is for the anti rust oil they will slather on before the gun goes away for 11 months. In addition, if they ever clean the barrel they will make sure to fire a fouling shot so the gun will hit the same after being cleaned...just saying you're preaching to maybe 10 percent of gun owners...

I always use a barrel brush and then pass a patch through it. Patches aren’t going to get carbon buildup too well without breaking it up first

Never used one. Never had any issues with any of my rifles. Maybe on a high precision machine it might make a difference. Machines that were designed to shoot at unrealistically long distances for the average hunter or enthusiast. But I clean all my guns the way my granddad taught me and they still make tight groups at any distance a person should be comfortable taking game.

You can be getting clean white patches out the other end, dry the barrel still getting several spotless patches, then switch to the oil and pick up what the solvents don't break down getting a few spots on patches.

I agree that a good cleaning rod is an overlooked tool you could or should have.

Just going to drop this here for a counter point, the boys on the Hornady (ammo manufacturer) podcast have said that in many rifles, cleaning down to bare steel(especially too often)can have negative effects on the accuracy of the weapon. Not saying don't clean the pews, just something to be aware of.

Point of Order: In this video is NOT...a "Good" bore guide OR Cleaning rod... I just needed SOMETHING Now... I'll update you with a GOOD option.
P.S. Couldn't fit it in the video.. but a bore guide also keeps all the cleaning fluids in the barrel, not in your trigger group, action, or magazine.

I don’t think you can get them anymore but I have several Mike Lucus Bore guides that I purchased for my gunsmithing business several years ago. They are bore and action specific and use a rod guide that is fit to the type of cleaning rod you use. I think Sinclair sells something similar but I have never used them.

I am not a fan of pointed jags because patches rarely cover the jag evenly nor do they clean the bore evenly. I use Dewy, Parker Hale style jags. Use the correct size patches and it will keep you centered and evenly clean the bore.

Id be real interested in a comparison between your future good rod/guide clean and one of those bore snake ropes with the bristles on the end.

I agree with nearly everything on your channel and i would love some explanation to how any cleaning rod or jag can damage any functioning part of a gun… cosmetics scratches maybe but there is quite a lot more forces at work when operating the rifle.

You've enlightened me on bore guides. TY. Now if there was some sort of trap to catch the solvent at the end of the muzzle 😅

It's good to have some of this out there in detail. There's a lot of bad practices, but importantly a lot of details that a guy flat wouldn't know unless someone keyed you on to what was happening. "wipe it down and snake it" as the extent of cleaning taught to me as a young guy, doesn't help when you start shooting enough to really foul up a piece and require detailed remediation. There's levels to this. Appreciate seeing the procedure, hope to see more
