t can be frustrating when your child throws food on the floor, but don’t take it personally, this is common behavior in young children and is developmentally appropriate!

These are 5 tips that you can implement:

1. Positive language: tell your child what TO do “the food stays on the table”. Instead of what NOT to do “don’t throw the food”

2. Follow their lead. I know as parents we want our kids to keep eating even after they say they are all done because we don’t think they ate enough, but for now, follow their signals and take the food away when that say “all done”.

3. Avoid big reactions: sometimes they jus love how we react when they throw food, they even find this very funny. So, instead of react when they throw the food, how about we react when they leave it on the table!!

4. Re-direct. Toddlers have so much energy, sometimes they just want to throw things! You can re-direct the behavior by saying “after you finish eating we can go a outside and throw the ball!”

5. Distract: sometimes we just need to make other things more interested, like dancing on the chair while we are eating, (we do this all the time) Abby gets so distracted dancing and eating that she forgets to throw the food!
