It really depends on the type of forest. Old growth and healthy forests will have trees of varying types and heights, with lots of foliage lower to the ground, so they may be able to climb a smaller tree to get high enough to reach the branches of a taller one.
Also if they're near a forest clearing, there's going to be trees with lower branches since there's more light available.

So D&D’s main setting is based on areas with prevalent evergreens and oaks, evergreen varieties have branches all the way down, and oaks generally split many times along the trunk. However yes, its much tougher on maples and the like. However, with any strip of fabric/rope and shoes that can grip you can climb decently. However, a climb speed is by Far superior

When climbing a thin-trunked tree, clasp your hands around the trunk and use your feet to push against them. Your hands will likely give out after fifteen feet, but that's your problem and not mine.
