With children autistic children you have to think outside the box because they give you exams that would put a PHD program and then teach you lessons.
With my child I tried to keep him, when I could, 10% outside his comfort zone to expand his zone, thus exposing him to some different things and let him talk to people about his interest in minerals to gems to geology to bats....it was great to see him talk and talk to people that had a similar interest or show an interest

My grandson is austic. You telling your story about the counter?Being flooded made me chuckle and think of something that he did. He likes to collect colored bottle caps, Well he wanted to cap off a brand new gallon of milk so he dumped the milk down the drain of the kitchen sink just so he could have a cap. So to make sure they didn't have to keep buying milk every day, My son Transfers the milk to a one gallon pitcher so that my grandson can have the bottle caps to play with.

Necessity is the mother of invention… Been there, seen that. And I too have CA glue and various tools on the countertop most of the time.😂

Might be a “quick fix,” but you took the time to use a visually pleasing wood species over the typical Home Depot pine most DIYers opt for, you beveled the edges and finished them.

That’s a quick fix you can live with for a while.
