So many people add big exhausts to their car in the hope it will mean they can make more power. The reality though is far different.

A larger exhaust can damage power by reducing the scavenging effect which would normally fully empty the cylinder of exhaust gases, this can raise temps causing the engine to back off an also reduces the amount of oxygen the car can use as there is less space for it.

Choosing an optimum exhaust size is critical and more importantly the shape and flow rates of each component in the exhaust should be taken into account.

Don't just fit a "nice sounding" exhaust, especially if your aim is performance, consult a specialist who can advise you on the best setup for your project, or do your research carefully taking into account the engines flow characteristics and requirements.
