Here is how to do Pediatric Basic Life Support (BLS) using the American Heart Association (AHA) guidelines. When it comes to our little patients, precision matters.

1. D - Danger Assessment: First, ensure the scene is safe for you and the child. Look out for hazards before approaching.
2. R - Response Check: Tap the child gently and call out, “Are you okay?” If there’s no response, it’s time to act!
3. C - Circulation Check: Check for a pulse. If absent or uncertain, start chest compressions. For infants (up to 1 year old), use two fingers; for children (1 to 12 years old), use the heel of one hand.
4. A - Airway: Open the child’s airway by tilting their head back and lifting the chin. Remove any visible obstructions.
5. B - Breathing: Give two rescue breaths. For infants, cover both nose and mouth; for children, cover only the mouth. Maintain a seal.
