You shouldn't have any runway behind you, when You start...

For anyone wondering about what was behind them, it was a crap load of runway. This guy start his take off roll like halfway down the runway. This was a very avoidable situation.

Doesn’t matter how much experience you have, when physics bites, it’s to the bone.

When I was a young cadet, my instructor told me, ‘If you accept an intersection departure, you’re going to look pretty silly if you find you’ve run out of runway if anything goes wrong’. Still abide by that 50 years later. From Australia.

I once was in a Cessna 310 twin engine plane with a guy who basically bought his pilots license became he had the money to do all of his rating in a short-term. We were taking off on a small field in Orville Ohio. He took off and almost hit a barn at the end of the runway. I looked at him and realized he wasn't reacting. I took the controls and throddled up and just cleared the barn. I never flew with him again. About six months later he ran off the end of the runway at old Freedom field in Medina Ohio and totaled his plane.

My house! I owned that house fifteen years ago. Treeport, between Spirit lake and Athol, Idaho. The area he wasn't using (to the west, he was going East) is a taxiway that isn't improved enough to take off from.

That pilot paid the ultimate price for his mistake. The passenger was ok with minor injuries.

FYI, the pilot died and the passenger was seriously injured.

The story is he was an airline pilot with plenty of hours in jets where you power and pitch but apparently not enough time in law powered fan planes with draggy floats that need to be thought about every moment.

They had sufficient airspeed to climb to 75’ over 40’ trees according to the NTSB. If they would have maintain altitude, airspeed would increase, they would achieve Vx, climb at Vx. Vx is best angle of climb speed, any speed faster or slower results in a lesser climb rate by definition. They failed to climb at proper airspeed. They had enough power, they had enough runway, they had enough performance. Aerodynamics don’t lie.

Why didn’t they start 600 feet back? They had so much more space they could’ve used.

Even I can see as a non pilot that the second he cleared the trees he should have lowered the nose a little to build up a bit of airspeed. Even including that he shouldn't have attempted to take off in that direction, it could have still worked if he'd resisted the urge to keep pulling up.

Three things a pilot doesn't need: the air above the wing, the runway behind you and the empty space in the fuel tanks.

I had a lot of time in a Cessna 206 my flying club owned. I was asked if I wanted to land it one night when we were out and about. One of the few times I declined. It was on it's summer floats and I had zero experience in that configuration and I was uncomfortable doing it at night with six souls on board. I did end up getting checked out in it ... during the day with just a CFI ... and I didn't have enough time in it to take passengers. Know your limitations and check your ego at the door.

I hesitate to call any fellow pilot who dies an idiot...but for this one I have to make an exception. He was settling even before he got to the trees and was lucky to clear them, but he did clear them and yet could have lowered the nose and maybe gotten out of this mess, but he continued to haul back, and even this forgiving Cub mushed along in a gentle stall and gave him all the time reasonable to save the situation or at least make a decent crash landing he could walk away from. But he chose to go into brain lock and keep pulling back on that stick anyway. Man, what were you thinking...

I am not a pilot but this content teaches me to pay attention to what you are doing all the time in whatever you are doing.
