My in-laws had a bbq grill setup with cinder blocks. It's lasted for nearly 25years

If the blocks are wet there is a chance they will pop. River rock can do the same thing. Use those blocks as a base. Then

Building a fire on a concrete pad is completely different. When I was a kid my grandpa brought some fish over for a fish fry. He built the fire on our concrete basketball pad and when the fire got hot the concrete exploded.

I used a cinder block rocket stove every day for almost 9 months. Never had a problem with it. No I didn't use it for 24 hours a day but most times 4 hours twice a day

It clearly cracked. Just like any regular concrete it can't take high temps.

Depending upon climate you might have had different results. Soaked in weeks of constant rain I'd expect issues. Your dry climate except for monsoon season I didn't expext issues.

I use them for the exact same thing but they can explode I have had one explode but I have been doing it for many many years and I've only had it happen once and I still use them

Interesting those look more like concrete blocks than cinder block and I don't believe they'll explode but the heat probably will disintegrate them sooner then later

I think this referred to red brick, not cinder block. A lot of outdoor barbeque/firepits are made of brick and they need to be allowed to sit for a month before lighting a fire. The bricks are first presoaked in water so the mortar doesn't dry too fast during the build.
