Back when I was in High School (Australia in the 70's), Music, as a subject, was solely geared towards classical music and orchestral or brass band instruments. I took it as an elective anyway, and learned a ton of theory, even though I only played guitar. By ear. Badly. But going into the final year of HS, I realised that I hadn't thought things through, as I had no chance of passing, not being able to even attempt the performance component. I dropped out. Now, my youngest daughter's high school music class resembles School of Rock. They have a recording studio. She sings, plays guitar, sometimes keys or bass, and will have a go at any instrument that's laying around. I'm so jealous.

My parents made me take up the piano in school but i learned the guitar on my free time. I remember i was chosen for a state-wide classical musical competition by my school and my parents pushed me hard on the piano. I hated it so when the day of the competition came, i borrowed a Fender Stratocaster from a friend and played Canon Rock during the competition. The audience were "horrified" saying its rock music but i argued it is classical music, just remixed

My high school instrument is vocals! I still use them every week at my local church on the worship team!
