I am 53, have some health issues and was never a fast runner even in my prime. For me, 'running away' is the same as 'turn around so they can stab me in the back'. I'll have to take my chances with self defense. I know nothing of knife fighting. I carry a firearm. I may, sometimes, also carry a compact fixed blade but the purpose of it is, if for some reason I can't bring my firearm to bear, to stick the pointy end where it will hurt until the assailant either stops or I can bring my firearm to bear. I wouldn't consider that to be a 'knife fight'.

As a guy that has been stabbed once and shot, I tell everyone the winner of a knife fight is the last guy to bleed out.
Most people get small wounds throughout their lives, but nothing major with arterial bleeding. It's the difference between tipping over a cup of water vs. turning on a hose. Seconds feel like minutes, minutes hours, and everything you're doing feels like the wrong move until you have stopped leaking. Adrenaline wears out and makes you tired, blood loss makes you tired, you get crazy hungry as your body tries to overdrive on producing red blood cells to comp for loss, and it starts to become hard to think about normal things.

That's not how real life works oh how real life works is if you don't have something on you to defend yourself then your options are zero knowing how to fight with a knife is no different than knowing how to shoot a gun you can always get caught flat-footed but the reality is it's better to have something then nothing at all life is not a theory in a box

As a former instructor told us "there are no winners in a knife fight, only survivors".
